The Social Problem
Each year, thirteen million hectares of forest disappear from the planet due to human activity, a frenetic pace of 100 square meters per second. Deforestation is mainly due to the extension of farming lands with 90% of deforestation linked to agriculture. Sixty percent of deforestation is caused by the extension of agro-industrial intensive framing and thirty percent is caused by small-scale farmers’ activities to develop their subsistence crops and energy resources. Forest degradation is one of the main contributors to climate change, responsible for 18 to 20% of greenhouse gas accumulation in the atmosphere.
Innovation and Activities
Pur Projet develops large scale agroforestry, reforestation and forest conservation projects with small-scale fair trade and organic farmers and is experienced in finding partners willing to fund such projects through the sale of environmental services such as “tree certificates” or carbon credits (VERs) to private and public organizations. Multinational companies are the major clients of Pur Projet, but instead of working to simply offset corporations’ emissions, Pur Projet’s innovation is to “inset” strategies for environmental conservation within the supply chains, products, and services of companies. "Insetting" brings in environmental and social innovation, and creates value, for the organizations themselves, local populations and the planet. Local activities developed are diverse: tree plantations, development of community trees nurseries, inventory of fauna and flora, permaculture, low carbon agricultural practices, eco-tourism on the edge of forests, development of socio-environmental activities. These activities are implemented by organizations of small-scale farmers, village associations, or communities of indigenous people.
Pur Projet work with Accor Hotels is a good illustration of its approach. Pur Projet worked with Accor Hotels to design a program to improve the environmental sustainability of its operations. Part of the program included encouraging hotel guests to reuse hotel room towels in order to save water. Money saved from reduced water use, funded an agroforestry project to plant 1 million trees. Pur Projet’s team worked directly with small cooperative farmers to plant and maintain the trees.
